Every Ukrainian has been familiar with the name Taras Grigorievich Shevchenko since childhood. Everyone knows that he was born in the village of Morintsy and only then did the family move to the village of Shevchenkovo, where the future poet spent his childhood.
What you need to know about the estate of Taras Shevchenko in the village. Shevchenkovo:
- Near the poet’s first dwelling there is the house of his maternal grandfather Yakim Boyko and the house of the clerk, where the future poet learned to read and write.
- The restoration of the complex was completed in 1989. During the construction work, all the features of rural architecture of the early 19th century were taken into account. The interior of the buildings is as close as possible to family life. Everything has been restored down to the smallest detail. The details of everyday life were restored, in particular, according to the drawings of Shevchenko himself.
- The original house has not survived: unfortunately, it burned down.
The complex has a chapel of St. Tarasius. - There is also a monument to Yekaterina Shevchenko (nee Boyko) with her son in her arms.
- Every year at the end of August, the She. fest festival and the celebration of the Independence Day of Ukraine are held here. Therefore, if you are planning, for example, in August, then you can match it to the festival.
- A guided tour can be booked for a fee. It will be quite inexpensive. We strongly advise you to come here on an excursion from local guides: this way the visit will be many times more informative and interesting. Local guides are great storytellers, people who love their job.
- All exhibits are restored. But this does not mean that they are not completely inauthentic.
Shevchenko’s grandson, T.T.Shevchenko, worked in the T.G. Shevchenko Museum for many years. His work was continued by his daughter, V. T. Shevchenko, who headed the museum for 30 years.
In 1992, on the basis of the museum, the State Historical and Cultural Reserve “Taras Shevchenko’s Homeland” was created, which united three villages of Kobzar’s childhood – Morintsy, Budishche, Kerelivka.
The first bust of the poet was erected here in 1917, which was replaced a few years later by a small monument to the genius depicted wearing a casing.
In 1989, the premises were reconstructed and overhauled, a bronze monument to the 13-year-old Taras was erected, who is depicted in linen clothes, barefoot, with clear eyes, with boots over his shoulders. And since 1992, the reserve has had national status and is protected by the state.
It is a great idea to come to the estate Museum of Taras Shevchenko, even if you are not a particular connoisseur of Ukrainian literature and have not traveled to Shevchenko’s places before. An authentic atmosphere, an opportunity to touch the history, many interesting exhibits – all this is here. The best and fastest way to get there is by car.
